Mesothelioma

Paul Kraus was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, and outlived his prognosis of 1 year, and decided to write a book about his struggles and his will to survive. The book is called  "Surviving Mesothelioma: A Patients Survival of Mesothelioma Cancer".

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which cancerous cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body's internal organs. There are two main types of mesothelioma - pleural which involves the sac that covers the pleural cavity around the lungs and peritoneal which involves the tissue that covers the abdominal area.

The only accepted cause is exposure to asbestos. Asbestos was in thousands of different products so many people were exposed at many times in their lives. 

Treatment options include standard therapies (surgery and/or chemotherapy and/or radiation), clinical trials, and alternative or complimentary therapies. Despite the depressing information on the internet, there are long-term mesothelioma survivors including: Paul Kraus, Stephen Jay Gould, Rhio O'Connor, and others. Paul Kraus's book explains what he did to survive his mesothelioma.

This book is free, and recommended reading for anyone struggling with mesothlioma.

The Host - Stephanie Meyer

The Host: A Novel by Stephenie Meyer

In this book, Meyer explores what happens to relationships and personalities when two people inhabit the same body. Earth has been taken over by aliens, (known as Souls), which take over the human bodies and erase the mind. At the start of the novel, Melanie Stryder, one of the few human left on earth, has been captured by the aliens and is implanted with a Soul named Wanderer. Although the process of implantation is not easy, Wanderer finds her host unwilling to let go of the mind they share. Wanderer is driven to find out why Melanie won't let go and soon finds herself wanting to reconnect with the ones her host most loved.
I loved The Host. The storyline was well written and even though some may say the romance was sappy, I think it was well played out. The diversification of characters and personalities (similar to the Twilight series) was easy to follow and fun to read.
As I read the book, the only thing that I would say was a little bit distracting is the similarities of characters between the Twilight Series and the Host. Obviously, since it was written by the same author, Stephanie Meyer, they will be slightly similar. But the characters are almost interchangeable, and because of this, predictable. You could go through the list of characters in one book and match them up exactly to the other. Different names, different stories, different world, same personality. But, I do love the characters and overall the book was well written and fun to read!
